A new initiative envisioned by Alessandro Michele, Gucci and Chatsworth House, part of Gucci Places, debut ‘Artist in Residence’ with Rachel Feinstein.
For this ongoing project, the estate, located in Northern England, will host artists to research and create pieces inspired by their stay. Famous for her multi–part installations, synthesising a myriad of cultural inspirations—including religion, myth, beauty, mortality and decadence—Rachel Feinstein is the first artist to participate. Her work has been shown by numerous museums around the world, including the Gucci exhibit ‘No Longer/Not Yet,’ at the Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai in 2015. During her stay at Chatsworth—the first location unveiled as part of Gucci Places, Rachel Feinstein was inspired to create a ceramic sculpture, ‘Britannia’ named after the Roman mythological figure that represents the British Isles. Also on show, ‘Rococo Hut,’ an aluminium and graphic representation of a playhouse, which has the appearance of a stage set or pop-up book—part of a series called ‘Folly.’ Both sculptures reference the 18th century baroque and rococo styles of art and architecture, dialoguing with not only works from the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s collection on display in the estate, but also the rich ornamentation and fantasy of Chatsworth House—where they will remain on show for several years.
