The Epiphany of a Constellation
Mystical encounters and mythological places – it is all written in the stars. In his latest fashion show, which took place against the backdrop of the historic Castel del Monte in Andria, Italy, Alessandro Michele gathered elements that at first sight seem atomized and dispersed, but become an assembly of complicity – “a connective structure that lights up the darkness through the epiphany of a constellation,” as he wrote in his notes on the collection.
Entitled CONSTELLATIONS, Alessandro Michele’s notes open with an homage to Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin, the latter of whom was a collector of quotations: “He discovers them from the depths of the sea and he brings them back on the surface of the water, as rare and precious pearls." In the Creative Director’s latest collection for the House, he draws inspiration from the Pearl Diver’s ability to “illuminate connections, which would otherwise be invisible.”
With the latest fashion show, the House’s Creative Director drew inspiration from myriad eras and places, capturing synchrony amongst elements previously unknown to each other. Beginning just at sundown on an evening marked by a fortuitous full moon, the runway circling the 13th-century castle played host to a procession of looks full of these references, giving life to his “eclectic thought,” and with a series of details designed to illuminate: “I always make clothes shine, if I can,” he said.
Speaking to a narrative of consistent evolution, the sartorial streetwear of Exquisite Gucci was succeeded by an elevated elegance in Gucci Cosmogonie through intricate constructions and embellishments, distinctive silhouettes, curious cut-outs, and optical motifs, complemented by a series of tailored pieces for both women and men.
A distinctive bag silhouette – a porte-parure inspired by an 18th-century antique designed to hold matching crown and jewelry sets – was transported to the present through rows of studs while a new top-handle design inspired by a doctor’s bag from the House’s archives revealed a selection of Gucci Beauty products within. A bracelet set with precious stones and a micro-mosaic cameo from the 1800s provided an exclusive preview of the forthcoming Gucci High Jewelry collection, to be revealed in June, and Elizabethan-era ruffs graced necklines and wrists. And then there was the clutch – inspired by a vintage Gucci version once owned by Greta Garbo, that surfaced in an auction – a confluence that Alessandro Michele would call a cosmic coincidence, whose starlight illuminated the path to this next stop on the journey we are all on alongside him.
