Everybody in The Place
Part of ‘Second Summer of Love’—a four-part series in collaboration with Frieze—the new film written and directed by Jeremy Deller, explores the social history of the UK between 1985 and 1993 through the lens of acid house and rave music. The film is based on a real-life lecture given to a class of students in London.
The explosion of acid house and rave in the UK was a reaction to a deep set of fault lines in British culture, stretching from the heart of the city to the furthest reaches of the countryside, cutting across previously impregnable boundaries of class, identity and geography. Deller’s film looks in depth at these social antecedents in the early and mid-1980s: the initial wave of acid house fever and media hysteria in the late 80s, its resurgence in the form of large-scale outdoor raves between 1988 and 1990, and the clampdown, which curtailed its power as a revolutionary force by the end of 1993.
The film will be screened exclusively at the Gucci Wooster cinema space in SoHo, New York from July 6-12, with four screenings per day.
