Traditional Craftsmen

Morihito Katsura and Naoko Ai, Goldsmith

Morihito Katsura was born in Tokyo in 1944. He became a "Living National Treasure” in 2008, and in 2021, he was awarded the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon by the Japanese government. Ai Naoko, born in Toyama in 1970, is a master’s graduate from the School of Tokyo University of Arts, and was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property by Arakawa City in 2020. Both work with traditional metal engraving techniques dating back to the Middle Ages.

Ai Tokeshi, Lacquerer

Born in Okinawa in 1979. After graduating from the Lacquer Division of the Industrial Art and Crafts Institute of Okinawa, she began training under a master woodturner in Wajima, Ishikawa in 2003. Inheriting the Ryukyu lacquerware culture of Okinawa, she works with modern woodworking lacquerware.

Hirotsune Nakazato, Ceramist

Born in 1975. His father is a master of traditional Mikawachi pottery in Sasebo City. Nazakato now has his own studio, Koyorian, in Arita, Saga Prefecture. Mikawachi ware, also known as Hirado ware, was an official craft of the region during the Tokugawa Era and quickly became popular in Europe. The porcelain artist creates pieces that link Mikawachi ware to today’s lifestyles.

Contemporary Artists

Daido Moriyama, Photographer

Born in Osaka in 1938. His photobook Farewell Photography (1972) is regarded as one of the most important photography books ever published. His work has been exhibited in major galleries and museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. He was awarded the Hasselblad International Photography Prize in 2019.

Yui Yaegashi, Painter

Born in Chiba in 1985. The artist uses the traditional medium of oils on canvas to create abstract paintings that are carefully composed of grid lines and color planes based on the structure of textiles. Her works are exhibited in international galleries such as Parrasch Heijnen in Los Angeles, Misako & Rosen in Tokyo, and La Maison de Rendez-Vous in Belgium.

Nami Yokoyama, Painter

Born in Gifu in 1986. The artist is known for her work with neon tube motifs and her works that shed light on discarded objects and the meaning of words. Her works are delicately shaded using a variation of the classical grisaille technique. Recent exhibitions include Aperto 10: Memories of Love and Me at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa (2019), and Roppongi Crossing 2022: Coming & Going at the Mori Art Museum (2022).
