On LA’s iconic Sunset Boulevard and inside the glamorous rooms of Chateau Marmont, Floria Sigismondi shot Kenneth Anger for an additional special edition for System Magazine.
The famed experimental filmmaker and author is photographed wearing pieces from the Gucci Cruise 2019 collection, including those decorated with the hotel’s logo Pan. In an in-depth interview he opens up on his friendship with Jean Cocteau and the darker side of Hollywood.
When asked about his ‘Lucifer’ tattoo he confesses, “I really cannot tell you; that is my earlier self who did kind of radical things. I have always consciously considered myself rebellious, much to the unhappiness of my parents. Rebellion was not something I learned to do; I just had that streak in me.”
About ‘Hollywood Babylon’ the book he wrote on the scandals of famous personalities from the 1900s to the 1950s he said, “I’d say Schadenfreude is a human trait. It’s a kind of reverse fan worship where people want to know more about their idol, and then when they hear that this person was arrested back then and this this and that happened, they are all the more fascinated.”
Combined with images from Kenneth Anger’s youth and stills from his movies, the interview uncovers what inspired his films, from ‘Fireworks’ to ‘Scorpio Rising’ and reveals his regret in never being able to make a feature-length film.
“I’ve been capturing reality and exploiting it all my life,” he adds.
