Michael Clark
For the sixth act of ‘The Performers’ GQ original video series with Gucci, dancer and choreographer Michael Clark travels to Japan in search of creativity and self-expression.
"I began dancing at the age of four, crashing my sister's Scottish dancing lessons; a surprise even to me as I was always so self-conscious of my body" reveals Clark. In the video, the renegade dancer is captured performing in diverse locations in Tokyo including an eclectic hotel and a bath house.
Clark’s dance career started in classic, after he was offered a place in the Royal Ballet. "It was very serious. They X-Rayed your wrists to see how tall you were going to be. I didn't fit in," he says. "Not because of the work ethic but because, well, it was the late Seventies and… punk happened. I was drawn to its energy, the chaos of it all."
He later started his own dance company, and brought his performances to Japan.
"I kind of think maybe the Japanese got my work before I did."
“My earliest awareness of Japan would have been through David Bowie because of the references in his wardrobe,” recalls Clark, who toured the nation with his mother and Leigh Bowery in the 1980s. “I could relate to Bowie’s otherness. The Japanese find beauty in the strangest things, especially nature; there’s a reverence for it that fills me with wonder."
