Weyes Blood is the project of songwriter Natalie Mering, whose creative references are the oceanic, the celestial, and the theatrical.
She inhabits dark, void-like spaces that are peppered with inspiring beings and her sonic oceans create big emotional waves.
Part of the #GucciGig series of performances and artist collaborations, Weyes Blood enlisted designer Taylor Giali to create a gatefold cover for a fictional album called ‘Orchestra of Ecstasy’, by the Far Reaches of Space Ensemble, where Weyes Blood gazes out from soft square lenses with the Gucci emblem and Web stripe.
On the cover, she beckons the observer into her post-lush meadow of space wheat. The surreal, extraterrestrial setting of subverted colors that gestures towards summer on earth. This other planet is closer to the sun, requiring optical shielding. Her allure converts seers into believers, communing in a cult of ecstasy. The album contains the intergalactic space hits ‘Manifestation Bop’ and ‘Astral Projector’.
Weyes Blood’s latest album, ‘Titanic Rising’, is washed with the romance of cinema. It’s a velvet-curtain drama that examines modern conundrums (dating, impending apocalypse) and eternal mysteries (love, belief) using Carol King-esque melodies, brooding strings, and ethereal synths.
Her songwriting picks up granular sweetness from several sources: groovy post-hippie ‘70s sensuality, under-the-sea enchantment, and celestial mysticism. Natalie Mering’s floating vocals suggest a resigned chanteuse singing on the mast of a sinking ship as the water begins to grace her ankles. — Dylan Tupper Rupert Discover Weyes Blood’s playlist on Gucci’s new Spotify profile, ‘Windows Down Please’.
