The seventh act of ‘The Performers’ GQ original video series in partnership with Gucci, presents renowned Osaka University roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro from Japan who is on a lifelong quest to build the world's first fully autonomous, sentinel android.
The new episode follows a day with Hiroshi Ishiguro, director of the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory (IRL) at Osaka University and two of his own creations—wearing Gucci by Alessandro Michele—Erica and Geminoid HI-4.
The film opens with Erica asking “Lately, I’ve been wondering what is the distinction between you and me?” referring to the differences between humans and robots. "I want to travel the world," explains Erica. “I want to help others. I want to help humans in their work”.
Hiroshi Ishiguro spent almost his life designing a series of photorealistic androids, ERICA being just one of them. His creations have a striking resemblance to their human counterparts - one called Gerinmod HI-2, for example, is modelled on Ishiguro himself. Gerinmod HI-2 has a height of 140cm, over 50 pneumatic actuators, arms, legs, a plastic skull, metal skeleton, urethane foam flesh and silicone skin.
"Overcoming the limitations stemming from our physical bodies by accepting new technologies - this is human evolution," adds Hiroshi.
